This is a print of an original drawing by J. Harris, c.1842, entitled 'Grand Exhibition of Cattle'. It was published by Messrs Fores at their Sporting and Animal Portrait Repository, London. It shows the exhibition of cattle at the show of the Royal Agricultural Society of England, held at Bristol, July 14th 1842. It is one of a collection of paintings and prints thought to date from the last quarter of the 18th century to c.1860. On the reverse is a print of an original painting by H. Edridge entitled 'Portrait of a Woman', 1826 (see 64/85/A).

In 1842 the Royal Show was held in Bristol but the commemorative print was published by&nbsp;London firm Fores Sporting and Animal Portrait Repository. These include animals which had won prizes at the Smithfield Shows of 1834 and 1851… At the request of the Council, Mr. W. J. Cumber and Mr. P. M. Colebrook inspected the paintings and prints, and they were unanimous in recommending that the Club should purchase the prints and present them to the Museum… The Museum have agreed that the collection shall be recorded as The Royal Smithfield Club Collection.’
