This set of beam scales and weights in a box date from the early-nineteenth century and come from Cologne. The scales are of the type used by bankers, with a cross beam and weigh pans. There are various weights for different English and continental gold and silver coins, including guineas, francs and guilders.

MERL miscellaneous note – ‘German box of scales and weights. Cologne, soon after 1800 (1803–4?). // Containing various weights for English and continental gold and silver coins including the guinea, the 40 and 20 Francs of France (Consulate of First Empire) the Italian Carlino, the Max d’or (or ducat) of Bavaria and weights for 10 and 5 guilder (Dutch or German gold) the “Sever” (= Souverain d’or of the Austria Netherlands, c 1780–90?). Also the Pistol (Spanish doubloon or ouza of lb dollars?).’
