Butter pats, also known as 'butter beaters' and 'Scotch hands', were used for working butter into blocks while removing the buttermilk. This pat has a hole in the handle by which it could be hung up and the underside is carved with parallel grooves. It is made of sycamore, a close-grained wood often used for dairy equipment, where scrubbing and cleaing is important. Nothing is known of the origins of this butter pat.
