MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'This meat fork was used for roasting. These forks which were very common in the 17th and 18th centuries, may have evolved from the iron three-barbed flesh hook of the Roman occupation. // This two-pronged fork came from Sussex. It is made of wrought iron and has a well-shaped handle. // It measures 23.75 overall, the prongs being 4 inches.', Victoria & Albert Museum No. M280, 1917.
