This hay tester was used to determine the cubical contents of a portion of hay. The metal rods screw together, and are inserted point first into the hay. A small portion can be withdrawn by the hook in the head. It was used by the donor's father when visiting farms with hay for sale, and comes in a leather case. It dates to 1880 or earlier.

MERL ‘Associated information’ form – 'Hay tester consisting of three metal rods which screw together, and can be inserted point first into hay to determine cubical contents. A small portion can be withdrawn by the hook in the head. Used by Mr Brown's father when visiting farms with hay for sale. Leather case.
