This is a jack plan, sometimes called a 'fore plane'. It is a tool used for preliminary rough surfacing. The blade is mitred like a chisel on the underside of the cutting edge, which projects further below the sole than usual so as to cut deeply and quickly. The blade is at an angle of 45°, the common pitch for planing soft woods. This plane was used by the donor's father, who was a wheelwright and carpenter in Braishfield, Hampshire. It is stamped 'H.J.BOWN' at both ends.
