This is a grid type barley awner, also known as a 'hummeler' or an 'iler' in Oxfordshire and Berkshire, for removing the 'awns' or beards of barley. Lavinia Smith bought it from John Kimber, a farmer from West Hendred, Oxfordshire.

MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'Miss Smith bought this hummeler from Mr. John Kimber of West Hendred (Berkshire). // It is a rectangular iron frame with blades set parallel to one another at two and a half inch intervals. The wooden handle is missing, but the socket is connected to the frame by four curved legs. The height is 15 inches, and the frame measures 16 by 11 inches.
