Bannocks are a traditional Scottish flat circular loaves made of oatmeal and water. They were cooked on a brander over an open fire. A bannock spade, like this one made of wrought iron, was used for turning over the bannocks as they cooked.

MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'This type of spade was used in the making of bannocks which are flat circular loaves of oatmeal and water.
