This mortising chisel, used for cutting mortices to create joints in wood, has an octagonal wooden handle and a bevelled square steel blade. It was used at R. Middleton & Sons' wheelwrights workshop in Eddington, Hungerford.

MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'The tool was used in the Middleton’s wheelwright workshop at Hungerford, Berks. // This mortising chisel is 12 inches long and it has a square steel blade 0.4 inches wide and 4.9 inches long, widening into the rounded hollow into which the handle is fitted. The wooden handle which is 4.0 inches in length is in the shape of an octagon. // See 51/363.'
