MERL 'Catalogue index' card – ‘… // DATE ACQUIRED: // GROUP: // NEGATIVE: // PERIOD: // PLACE OF ORIGIN: // NUMBER: // DESCRIPTION: …‘ This pole shave for smoothing and paring round pieces of wood came from Sompting, Sussex, where it was used by a wheelwright, Mr. G. W. Weller. // The plane consists of two blocks of woode, each measuring 9.5 inches in length, 5.5 inches in width and 1.5 inches in depth. Each of these blocks has a grove cut out of the centre so that when they are put together, they form a round hole through the plane. The blocks can be expanded by means of 2 screws thich terminate in handles. At one time they were covered in wood, but the wood is missing from one handle and almost non-existent except for a small fragment in the other. The blade is also missing. // See 51/312. //
