MERL 'Catalogue index' card – ‘… // DATE ACQUIRED: // GROUP: // NEGATIVE: // PERIOD: // PLACE OF ORIGIN: // NUMBER: // DESCRIPTION: …‘ At right angles to the handle the iron shank of the auger has been fixed, its end being hammered into flatness on the top end of the handle. The parallel sides of the spoon act a smoother of the boring after the sharpened nose has cut downwards. Although the auger is of great length, the fact that the spoon is only 4.5 ins long, means that the auger had to be withdrawn frequently in order to discharge the shavings when a deep hole was cut. // See also 51/55M. //
