This is a small bundle of buff salix parpurea willow, a high quality species of red willow grown only in the Ribble Estuary area of Lancashire, particularly around Mawdesley. The variety is also known as ‘dicks’ or ‘dicky meadows’ and is much prized by basketmakers. Buff willow is willow that has been boiled in water for eight hours and been stripped of its bark.
