Beschrijving
This patchwork bedcover was used by the donor's mother and siblings, and probably dates from the second half of the nineteenth century. It has a Courtyard steps design using patterned and plain fabric pieces. The backing of the bedcover is real paisley, and was probably part of a paisley shawl.

MERL 'Handwritten catalogue' form – 'BEDCOVER (PATCHWORK) // See Form // The backing is real paisley, and probably part of a paisley shawl. About 80 to 100 years old. Used by [...] mother + uncles. // Approx 42" x 36".', MERL Recording form – 'Additional information // These bedcovers are not a work of art, but a wonderful record of the designs in materials in common use at the time. The backing is real paisley and probably part of a Paisley shawl. // As for age, I cannot say. My mother and her two brothers were orphaned when the youngest was still a baby, and were taken into the home of their French grandparents. The covers were used on their beds, and knowing how long they would take to make, it is more than likely the covers were already well used before the children had them. This would make them anything from 80 to 100 years old.'
