This decorated black waistcoat probably came from Yalding, Kent, and dates from the early-nineteenth century. It was known in the family as a 'farmer's waistcoat', and was worn at weddings.

MERL 'Handwritten catalogue' form – 'WAISTCOAT // called 'Farmer's Waistcoats': Possibly from Kent see letter // Black waistcoat with attractive all over and border design of green, blue + white flowers and leaves. It has 7 small black buttons and is lined with brown material.', Letter, Alicia Percival to MERL, 17 January 1962 - 'I am now enclosing with the consent of my Aunt, Miss Margaret Eyre, three early nineteenth century waistcoats. They were always known as 'Farmers' Waistcoats' (in the family) and she used to say they were what a farmer would wear on his wedding day. // As she lived in her early days at Yalding in Kent, I fancy they must have come from there...'
