Moulding planes have curved or shaped blades and are used to create mouldings, or profiles, in wood. This moulding plane belonged to Mr W. W. Field, a wheelwright in Winson, Gloucestershire. Mr Field retired circa 1960 and the business closed. The end of this plane is inscribed ‘Charles & Co. // Warranted’ (manufacturer) and ‘W. Field'. Charles & Co. are known to have been planemakers at various addresses in Birmingham from 1854 to 1886, and appear to have also operated in London.
