This door latch is made of iron and dates from approximately 1750. It was made in Broughton-in-Furness, Cumbria, by a local blacksmith, and was used in the donor's house in Broughton-in-Furness. It was described by the donor as a 'Suffolk latch' and is operated by a thumb release. In contrast, a 'Norfolk latch' is operated by means of a turning ring.
