This is the removable wooden handle of a flat iron. Flat irons were externally heated for ironing domestic laundry. The handle is attached to an iron base by the spring clip in the centre underneath the arched handle. An inscription on the underside of the accompanying iron base reads 'Mrs Potts Pat. Oct. 18. 1876. // Pat. Group. No 2.' The origin or place of use of this iron handle is not known.
