This is the base of a flat iron, which can be attached to a removable wooden handle. Flat irons were externally heated for ironing domestic laundry. An inscription on the underside of the iron base reads 'Mrs Potts Pat. Oct. 18. 1876. // Pat. Group. No 2.' The origin or place of use of this iron base is not known.
