This apron was kept in the attic of Stonelands Farm, Withyham, East Sussex, for many years. It is possibly made of waxed linen, and has a skirt gathered at the waist and two sets of tabs, one to be tied behind the neck, the other around the waist. It is thought possible that the apron originally belonged to the donor's great grandmother, Louisa nee Tompsett, of Combe Farm, Wadhurst.

1 apron: good conditionMaterial possibly waxed linen. Skirt is gathered at the waist (Skirt length from waist is 94cm) On the right hand side of the skirt is a deep pocket with a curved cut-away, to allow easy access. Above the pocket, folded over the waist band, a small piece of paper is pinned. It reads: 2/6' Southboro. The top of the apron is also gathered at the waist. There are two sets of apron tabs, one to be tied behind the neck, the other round the waist. On the front of the skirt (central) there is a small blue line. under this at the hem, the number '36' is printed. There is a small hole above the hem, which appears to have been treated to stop it fraying further. There is a small brown stain on the left hand side of the skirt.

MERL 'Handwritten accession' form (Museum of English Rural Life) – 'APRON // Description // 1 apron, linen ? possibly waxed. // Skirt is gathered at the waist (skirt length only=94cm). On the right handside of the skirt is a deep pocket with curved cut-away, to allow easy access. Above the pocket, on the waist band is a small piece of paper (folded over the waist-band and pinned on) on the paper is written , '2/6 // Southboro'. // The top of the apron is also gathered at the waist. There are two sets of apron tabs, one to be tied behind the neck, the other around the waist. On the front of the apron skirt (central) there is a small blue line. Under this at the hem is the number '36'. There is a small hole above the hem, which appears to have been treated, to stop it fraying further. There is a small brown stain on the left hand side of the skirt. // Dimensions // 118 x 122cm (length down centre, width at fullest part of apron hem.) // Associated information // The item was deposited along with a smock (Accession no. 2003/2). Both items were in the attic of the donor's father's house for many years. Father's and donors farm is; Stonelands Farm, Withyham. The family have farmed in Sussex for generations. Could have been kept by the donor's great grandmother, Louisa nee Tompsett, Combe Farm, Wadhurst. (1836-1927)'
