[nb-NO]Description[nb-NO]
This is a 'potato screen', or shovel, with wooden (possibly ash) shaft and iron handle, with a basket like shovel consisting of tines joined at the end by a slightly curved cross piece. 'Made in England' and 'Brades' are stamped on metal part of shaft. The potato screen was manufactured by William Hunt & Sons, Brades Steel Works. Oldbury, near Birmingham. It was part of the stock in the iron mongers at Hook, near Basingstoke, formerly owned by A. T. Aldridge and taken over by the donor in 1955. A potato screen digs up the crop by the provision of the cross piece, while the surplus soil can be shaken through the spaces between the tines.
