[nb-NO]Description[nb-NO]
This Dorset plough was used in the Beaminster area of Dorset. It is a wooden plough, with iron working parts, and was probably adapted from its original form with catalogue parts. It is thought to be nineteenth century in origin, and the wheels were probably added at a later date. The ploughshare is inscribed 'R. Brown', referring to the maker.

The two wheels at the front are of different diameters - the larger one runs in the trench of the previous furrow, and the smaller one on the land yet to be opened up. Adjustments to the height and setting of the wheels altered the depth and width of the furrow slice cut. Wheeled ploughs of this sort were best used on lighter land where the wheels would not clog with clay or mud.
77/106

5. Dorset Plough, nineteenth century
This wheeled plough was used in the Beaminster area of Dorset. [nb-NO]Archival history[nb-NO]
Letter, S. B. Ward to Mr Bugler, 1st July 1971 - 'Our feeling is at the moment that it is a basic Dorset design in some respects, but adapted to something taken out of a mid 19th century catalogue, and with wheels added. The draught bar fitment looks a bit weak, and one wonder whether the whole thing was particularly efficient for its general type... We would particularly like to know when it was put together and will be trying to discover when Browns made their No 5 set of parts.', MERL 'Handwritten accession' form (Institute of Agricultural History) – 'Wooden plough with iron working parts. Wheel plough, stilt bolted to mouldboard. // C19th // Inscription: R. Brown on ploughshare. // An adapted version of a Dorset plough.'
