MERL 'Handwritten accession' form (Institute of Agricultural History) – 'PAINTING, watercolour // Transport Land goods horsedrawn // James Arnold, Ledbury, Herefordshire // Description: Worcestershire wagon. Drawn, painted and signed by James Arnold 1965. 38 x 28 cm. Dimension: Light wood frame, glazed 50cm x 40.5cm high // Associated information: Painting of a wagon owned by Henry Taylor, Suckly, Worchestershire. Yellow body, with blue end and red wheels. See attached notes.’, MERL miscellaneous note –‘Notes made by James Arnold, “Rosendale”, Newton, Ledbury, Herefordshire: Mr Taylor’s Wagon. // Built not later than 1880, probably by the Prestons, of Cradley, for Henry Taylor, Timdridge Farm, nr. Suckly, Worcestershire. // This is in conformity with a ‘Buff’ Hereford. Body dimensions 11’4” x 3’10 x 1’7½”. The wheels, running on iron arms, are canted 19½ and flat soled with 6” strakes, jointed diagonally. Wheelbase is 71” and the track (centre to centre) is 58”. // A set of thripples and side boards is supplied. The latter are exquisitely made with fine chamfering on the staves. // An unusual feature is the form of locking chains, which run horizontally from front to hind beds, each with 3 intermediate supporting chains. (Mr Harper, opposite our house, has a trolley with identical chains) // Lining-out is absent, but the chamfering on the under-carriage is unusually good. // The faded colours are a ‘pungent’ peach-buff and v pale salmon (Grade III!). The head board is faded Prussian blue with 2 white oblows. // This wagon is in first class order and an excellent state of preservation, requiring little more than repainting.’
