This is a posser, which is used to mix laundry when hand washing. This posser was used at Slaithwaite, West Yorkshire, c. 1880.

MERL ‘Handwritten catalogue’ form - ‘POSSER // Domestic- Cleaning- Laundering // 65/25 // Dr. Holt, Chemistry Dept., The University, Reading // See Recording Form. Used c1880 at Slaithwaite, Yorkshire, and was bought from a local market. It is made of wood, and the handle has been damaged at some time and replaced. The metal analogue which was commonly used in this century was called a ponchion // 20x28 (diameter x height) bottom painted white, plain straight handle, 5 holes around side of case.’
