[nb-NO]Archival history[nb-NO]
MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'Footwarmers were in frequent use during the last century. Inside the stool is a metal flask which was filled with hot water and this warmed the top surface of the stool. The under surface is lined with wood to prevent the heat escaping. Such a footwarmer might be used in a house or while travelling in a carriage. The foot-warmer is made of wood with an inlaid veneer round the edge and a carpet top. The water container inside is made of tinned iron with a brass screw stopper. There is a handle on the front side of the stool so that it can be carried when travelling. The stool is 13 inches long, 11 wide and 4.5 high. Mrs. Holden brought it to Newbury from her family home at Papplewick Hall in Nottinghamshire.'
