A hoof pad is used to prevent damage, concussion or bruising to the sole of a horse's hoof. This is one of three given to the Museum by the donor and is made of gutta percha, a natural form of latex.

MERL ‘Associated information’ form – 'Gutta percha hoof pad was about 40 years in shop - old then'., The donor lived at 'The Forge' in Shutford, Oxfordshire, and he may well have been a farrier and used the gag.
