This square piece of tile was used in a subsoil drainage system, probably underneath a horseshoe type. It was made and used by tenant farmers who may have obtained loans under the Public Monies Drainage and Improvement Act of 1846-1864. Tenant farmers were often assisted by the land owner who, in some cases, provided the tiles for the tenant to lay.
