This portion of a horse's harness consists of a whippletree and trace chains. A whippletree, sometimes also called an 'equalizer' or 'leader bar', is a tool used to distribute a pulling force evenly. The trace chains connect the whippletree to the horse's collar. It was used with other harness equipment at Houghton Park Farm in Ampthill, Bedfordshire.
