[nb-NO]Description[nb-NO]
Glass fronted display case containing leaves of tobacco (known as tobacco hands) grown in England. The case contains labelled examples of Samos 1930, 1931, Golden Queen 1930, Burley 1931 (x2), Burley 1935 (x2), Soulouk Turkish 1936 and Green Dragon 1932, 1933, 1934 (x2), 1936 and small leaf Turkish 1936.
Arthur Brandon was one of the first large scale growers of tobacco in England after the relaxation of the ban in commercial growing in 1910. He grew on land around Church Crookham, North Hampshire and his home Redfields. The delivery labels on the back suggest it was sent to H. Stevens and Co, Salisbury by Arthur Brandon and returned to him via London and South Western Railway.
Two sticky labels with ballpen handwriting removed. One read: 'for making into cigs by H. Stevens & Co and sold - eventually defeated by excise duty'. The other read: 'TOBACCO HANDS as grown in Church Crookham 19 - 1937 after drying packed in hogsheads to go to Salisbury'.
