This round file, also called a 'rat's tail file' has a round cross section, which tapers towards the end. Round files were used by woodworkers for enlarging holes or grooves. This round file is stamped 'Thomas Turner & Co, Warranted Best Cast Steel' on the handle, referring to the Sheffield manufacturers. It was used by the donor's father, who was a wheelwright and carpenter in Braishfield, Hampshire.
