This smoothing chisel has a blade sharpened on both sides, at an acute angle to the shaft, and the shank is stamped ‘Marsden Brothers, Sheffield’. It is a lathe tool, and was used to reduce the surface of the wood to a uniform level as it whirled around on the lathe. It was used at R. Middleton & Sons’ wheelwrights workshop in Eddington, Hungerford.
