This is a shell auger, a woodworking tool used for boring deep, long holes into wood. It consists of an iron shaft with a square section and a semi-circular bit, with a wooden 'T'-shaped handle. It was used by the donor's father, who was a wheelwright and carpenter in Braishfield, Hampshire.
