This lidded, hinged box contains 51 vials, of which 49 contain samples of seed varieties. All, bar one, features a white sticker label on which the Latin name of the seed variety is named. All vials are stopped with cork. The inside of the lid reads in faint green ink: F.L. Dodd, Wantage Hall, January 30th 1940'. This set belonged to Frank Leslie Dodd, an Agriculture Student at the University of Reading between 1938-40. This item was donated along with notes and letter belonging to Dodd, including agricultural observations and practical test notes written by Dodd, documenting tests of various foodstuffs including Zea (maize) seed, and the pea and Ricinus seed. Included in the latter are pencil sketches of plant and seed varieties. These items are held in the object's accession file.

His studies were curtailed by WWII when he was a pilot in the R.A.F - his career continued after the war until he retired as Air Vice Marshal in 1974. After this he became Administrator of the MacRobert Trusts in Aberdeenshire, where he was glad to be working in an agricultural set-up so many years later.
