This is a leather fire bucket for extinguishing fires, with seams at the base and sides and with a leather handle. The letters ‘E. H.’, possibly standing for East Hendred, are painted in white on the side.

Lavinia Smith Catalogue (D60/28) - 'A list of the contents of the East Hendred museum. July 5 1940 // 560. One of the original leather fire buckets belonging to the East Hendred fire engine. // 561. Another of the old E.H. buckets.' (Other object referred to is 51/775), East Hendred Fire Service - 'The Fire Engine which is called the East Hendred Engine but which was purchased by public subscription raised in that and neighbouring parishes in 1830, requires some new hose and some new fire buckets. It is proposed to take a subscription for the purchase of the same. If after paying for the above, there should remain any surplus, it is suggested that surplus should form a fund for the future repairs of the engine and payment of the men who work it.
