Nothing is known about the origin of this wrought iron ratchet hanger, which was used for suspending cooking utensils over an open hearth. It has a tubular upright, ten teeth and a grooved and curved hook.

MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'The tubular upright of this hanger is 2 feet 10 inches long. It has a knob at one end from which a very fine loop is suspended. The short arm of the hook on the upright is 9.3 inches long. // The ratchet is 1 foot 9.5 inches long, 2.2 inches wide and has 10 teeth. The ratchet is rather thinner than is usual. The hook has a double groove on the outer curved surface. There is an ornament on the top outer corner which has been broken away.
