Descrizione
This is a plough sledge, used to carry a short plough up a shallow hill on a farm in Wales. It was also used by the donor’s grandfather to move limestone rocks when building his rockery, was in storage for several years from 1880, and then later used by the donor to move stones. It is made of wood, with two metal strips running halfway along the sides and joining at the end to form a hook.

Letter, Dorothy Hartley to MERL, 1960 – ‘You will find the sled – slegge or slide, illustrated and described on Pge; 94 Parr; 574 of Vol I Edit MDCCCLXXXI of STEVENS BOOK OF THE FARM all details given. // … they were as much part of the full equipment of a plough as the plough staff or plow mole. // The design varies with the district, this was to take a short shallow hill farm plough, but is fairly representative. // There may have been a staple ? or more probably a hollowed block of wood bolted on, to take the point of the coulter and share, this would have been broken off leaving the hole when the sled was used in my grandfathers time to haul waterworn limestone rocks to build his Victorian rockery. It was stored dry, in our garden shed since 1880 ? till I fished it out, to again haul stones, while repairing a falled wall. Since then it was regrettably left out in the wet, and most of the crumbling and rusting resulted. // The sleds are rather rare, for they went out of use with the wheeled plough, ALSO (as proved!) they were handy for small jobs. (Somewhere among the negatives is one of men using this sled). Meanwhile – look up Stevens – he does not have the hook and has bridge staples for his, lowland, two horse plough; but up narrow rocky lanes, or across rough hill lands, a central pull, that allows for a waggle is easier to steer behind a sturdy welsh pony…’
