Tinderboxes were used to create fire before matches. This is a round brass tinder box with a candle holder in the centre of the lid and a handle at the side. The box contains a damper, to extinguish the tinder after a sulphur match had been ignited from it, a flint and a steel, but no tinder.

MERL 'Catalogue index' card – This is a round brass tinder box with a candle holder in the centre of the lid and a handle at the side. The height of the candle socket is adjustable by a slide. The box contains a DAMPER to extinguish the tinder after a sulphur match had been ignited from it. The damper is a flat metal disc with a wooden knob by which it could be held.
