This two-tined pitchfork was used during the harvest. It would have been attached to a handle of up to six feet in length, and likely used for pitching hay or corn sheaves onto the wagons and carts and then from the wagon to the rick or barn.

MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'The origin of this small pitchfork from the Lavinia Smith collection is not known. It has a pair of tines, one 8.4 inches long and the other 8.1 inches. The tines are 5.3 inches apart at the tip. The handle was fixed by means of a tanged point 4.3 inches in length, welded to the junction of the tines. // See 52/4.'
