MERL ‘Stakeholders’ recording form, December 2013 – Object number: 71/233 // Name of recorder: Sue Kirk and Angie Tavernor // General construction method: Stake and strand. Fitched. // Overall shape: Round // Materials: Buff willow. 7-foot – base stakes. 5-foot – uprights/side stakes. 4-foot – weaving rods. // Base: 4 x 4 English underfoot base. After tying in the slath, the first round is woven as pairs, the next round is in singles. // Sides: 32 ‘true’ side stakes. 32 bi-stakes. 2 sets of 4-rod pull-down wale, drop one, and 4 rounds of 3-rod wale. Spiral fitching x 5 rows, 6.5cm apart. 2 rows of 3-rod wale. // Border: 6 rod behind 2 border using 64 side stakes. Very neat crammed 8 rods away at the end. // Handles: 2 x small handles, 6 stakes apart, inserted into waling wrapped with a willow skein. Secured by wrapping a skein through the waling and over the border. // Lid: N/A // Dimensions: Top diameter 36cm. Base diameter 25.5 cm. Height 34 cm. Handle height 36 cm. // Anything else to note about this particular basket: Unusual use of all side stakes to make a fine, well-made border. Because in this case the rods were quite thin, so by not using them all the border would have been too thin. Handles not same quality as the rest of the basket. // Anything else to note about this type of basket: –
