This decorative basket comes from Japan. It is a round, urn shaped basket with a trunk cover, triple handle and foot. It is made of split bamboo in various ornamental weaves. Baskets such as this were used for storing cooked rice and were hung in a cool place, but this one was probably used as an ornament.

The Ann Mary Pilcher Collection of Victorian Baskets (67/60-94) was collected by Ann Mary Pilcher in 1957-1967, mostly from junk shops and stalls.
