This is a one quart measure for measuring milk from a pail. It is made of tin and consists of a bucket with a scoop-shaped handle. It is insribed with '1 Quart; Thos W. Harrison, Maker, Nottingham' and 'VR 193' and has the Royal stamp of verification from Queen Victoria's reign, dating it to between 1837 and 1901. This one was used in the kitchen at Papplewick Hall, Nottinghamshire, until 1916 and then at Goldwell in Newbury.

MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'Quart measures such as this were used for measuring milk out of a pail, like 54/358. This particular specimen, however, was used in the kitchen of a great house for measuring milk. It was in use at Papplewick Hall, Nottingham, until 1916 and from then till 1951 at Goldwell, Newbury. // It is made of tin, and consists of a bucket shaped scoop and a handle with a hook at the top turning backwards. The handle hooked over the edge of the milk pail, when the measure was not in use. // It is marked “1 Quart; Thos W. Harrison, Maker, Nottingham” and [drawing of crown over ‘VR’ and ‘193’ ‘193’]. The measure is 5 inches in height and 3.75 inches in diameter across the base.'
