This is a straw roller, made of iron, and used in the straw plaiting industry to flatten the plaits used for making hats. It was probably made in Luton, and was in use circa 1870–1949, firstly in Luton and later in London.

MERL Recording form - ‘Who used it: The makers of English straw-plait which after rolling the plait was then machined into Ladies hat shapes for the millinery trade. // When was it used: Roughly from 1870-1949. // How was it used: To flatten the head of the straw plait after it had been made by the plaiters either working at home or in local factory. // Where was it used: Roughly from 1870-1925 in Luton and from then on by Luton Straw hat manufacturers & finally by wholesale hat manufacturers (Messrs H & K Kipling Ltd) from 1934 - until 1949 in London. // Has it a local name: Not that is known, maybe Mr Freeman of Luton Museum could help further as he has written a booklet about plait mills. // When this object was used do you know if it was common in many parts of the country or only in the place from which it came: Quite possible but I do not know specifically. // Who made it: probably made in Luton about 1870-1910 perhaps makers name may be stamped on it. We bought it from Messrs Weatherhead & Sons, Luton. // When was it made: between 1870-1910 - about the time of the industrial revolution. // Where was it made: as far as can be ascertained in Luton by Luton engineers. // From materials is the object made: Iron. // Is it corroded or broken or damaged in any way: only corroded slightly by non-use for several years // Additional information: Please contact Mr Freeman - Curator of Luton Museum - who if he could see the machine could probably give a more precise date and any additional data.’
