This box wheel churn was used for making small quantities of butter, by churning cream. It consists of a box, with a separate lid, in which a paddle with four arms is attached to a handle, to turn. This churn was used in Surrey.

The two ends of the box churn slope in at the base for 8 cm and are strengthened by a bar of wood. The paddle has four blades made of slats of wood. It is suspended on a metal rod with wooden fixings. The handle is made of metal with a wooden end for grasping.

MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'This box wheel butter churn consists of a strongly made rectangular box which is 13 inches long, 10 3/4 inches wide and 11 1/2 inches high. The wheel inside the box has four arms, each arm having two slats. A steel bar which serves as a handle passes through a hole in the side of the box and through the centre of the wheel. This bar has a wooden handle which is split. The lid of the churn which measures 14 inches by 12 inches has a wooden bar across the top for lifting.
