Letter, Isaac Braithwaite & Son Engineers Ltd. to C. J. Dawkins, March 9th 1951 - 'As you will no doubt have heard, our friends Messrs Braithwaite & Co. Structural Limited, Great Bookham, forwarded the letter you sent them to us, and we regret the delay in replying to you, but the undersigned took your letter and sketch up to our Works at Kendal, Westmorland, this week, to see if we could trace if this appliance had ever been manufactured by us. // We regret to advise you that it is not of our manufacture and we are at a loss to know what firm of Braithwaite could have manufactured it, as our opinion is that the firm in question may possibly now be defunct. // We return your sketch herewith which we found very interesting.', Letter, Braithwaite & Co. Structural Limited to C. J. Dawkins, 3rd March, 1951 - 'We thank you for your letter of the 26th February addressed to our London Office and we are very interested in the particulars you give of the ancient dis-used iron pump in your possession, although we are not the manufacturers. // We do not know any firm of our name with premises in New Road Tottenham Court London but this might have been the original address of Messrs Isaac Braithwaite & Son Engineers Lts. of 200 upper Thames Street, E.C.4. and we are taking the liberty of sending your letter to them. // We regret that we are unable to be of further assistance to you.', Letter, C. J. Dawkins to Messrs Braithwaite & Co, 26th February 1951 - 'On taking over this property last year I discovered an ancient disused iron pump of your manufacture in position over a well. According to local tradition it used to be horse operated but it appears to have been adapted for hand rotation. It has a large flywheel on the primary shaft which is rotated by the handle, and a pair of cogs passes the drive through to a crankshaft which sends two vertical shafts or pistons oscillating into the depths of the well. There is an inscription on the ironwork: // BRAITHWAITES Fecit NEW ROAD TOTTENHAM COURT LONDON // (A rough sketch is enclosed.) // I am proposing to dismantle this pump, but before doing so I am taking the advice of many visiting firends in asking whether it may be of any interest to you as an antique, in which case I would be pleased to hear from you.'
