This mortising chisel, used for cutting mortices to create joints in wood, has a square blade stamped 'Isaac Greaves Cast Steel' and a round, probably turned, wooden handle. It was used at R. Middleton & Sons' wheelwrights workshop in Eddington, Hungerford.

MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'This mortising chisel from the Middleton’s wheelwright shop at Hungerford has a total length of 11.6 inches. Its square blade with a tip 0.3 inches wide, broadens and hollows out for 3.5 inches of its length and the round wooden handle fits into it. This handle, decorated by four concentric lines, is 4 inches long and is well shaped, probably by means of a lathe. The blade is stamped ‘Isaac Greaves Cast Steel’. // See 51/363.'
