This mortising chisel, used for cutting mortices to create joints in wood, has a steel blade stamped 'Weldon' and an octagonal wooden handle which has been flattened at the top by the constant hammering of the mallet when in use. It was used at R. Middleton & Sons' wheelwrights workshop in Eddington, Hungerford.

MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'This mortising chisel was used in the Middleton’s wheelwrights’ workshop at Hungerford, (Berks). The blade is of a squared bar of steel stamped with the inscription ‘Weldon’. The blade itself which is 3.8 inches long widens, becomes rounded and is hollowed out for 3.4 inches to accommodate the wooden handle. The tip which is sharpened is 0.7 inches in width and the rounded handle which is 4.6 inches in length, has been flattened at the top with the constant hammering of the mallet when in use. The total length of the tool is 11.8 inches. // See also 51/363.'
