This is one of 64 printing blocks used to print the illustrations in ‘The English Farm Wagon: Origins and Structure’ by John Geraint Jenkins, as published in 1961. Jenkins was the Assistant Keeper at MERL 1953-1960, and these blocks were found in the Museum in 2010. This block - Figure 29 on page 126 - shows a photograph of a Hertfordshire wagon from Harpenden. The Hertfordshire wagon is a small, spindle-sided box wagon with narrow wheels and a short, deep body. They were commonly painted dark brown with buff wheels and undercarriage, and yellow or buff decorations. Hertfordshire wagons were used in Hertfordshire, south Bedfordshire and East Buckinghamshire.
