This is a print of an engraving from an original painting, 'The Blakewell Ox', by George Cuit, c.1820. It was engraved by J. Bailey and published in 1780. It is signed Clark June 30 1809. It is one of a collection of paintings and prints thought to date from the last quarter of the 18th century to c.1860.

George Cuit (artist) John Bailey (engraver) BLACKWELL 1780 The painting this print is based on was said to be the first known portrait of named sire. George Cuit was a builder's son whose talent led to a wealthy patron sending him to Italy to train. He also painted other animals such as the famed Durham Ox (a portrait of this animal by another artist can be seen to the right). John Bailey, the engraver, was also an agriculturalist. At one time he worked as land agent at Chillingham. The Estate is home to a herd of 'wild cattle' who were spared the process of improvement. MERL 64/73

These include animals which had won prizes at the Smithfield Shows of 1834 and 1851… At the request of the Council, Mr. W. J. Cumber and Mr. P. M. Colebrook inspected the paintings and prints, and they were unanimous in recommending that the Club should purchase the prints and present them to the Museum… The Museum have agreed that the collection shall be recorded as The Royal Smithfield Club Collection.’
