This is a large pair of scales which may have been used in a village shop. The upright and beam are made of wrought iron and the pans, a round pan for the weights and a larger rectangular pan for the produce, are made of copper.

MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'This is a pair of large scales, whose origin is unknown, but they may well have been used in a village shop. // The upright and beam are made of wrought iron. The upright has a solid rectangular base and a stem twisted in the middle for ornamentation. The stem divides into two at the top and the beam pivots on a pin between the two branches. It stands 27 inches high. // The beam is 20 inches in length, and has an ornamental spike in the centre, and a pattern painted on the sides in green and white. The ends of the beam curve upwards and end in loops. Into these loops, the two pans hook on either side. The weight pan is round and is made of copper, lined inside with lead. Three chains are fastened to it and are looped through a hook which is fastened to the beam. The produce pan is rectangular, also made of copper and fits into the angle of an iron arm which hooks into the loop of the beam.
