Hazel and ash are popular handle woods. The unfinished handle is held fast in the clamp of the broom horse which is operated with pressure from the broom maker's feet. The broom maker removes the bark and roughly shapes the handle with a draw knife, whilst the smaller round shave, lying on the nearby stump, helps him to obtain a smooth finish. An axe is used to create the sharpened point at one end of the handle that he later pushes into the besom brush before securing the two permanently together.
SR RIB PH2/3/23

4. Besom broom handles
Seated on his broom horse, the besom maker prepares the broom's handle.
