Pilgrim basket,
Description
This travelling basket for luggage, known as a ‘pilgrim’, is a rectangular, straight sided basket in two halves – a base and a lid. The two halves were secured with straps which wrapped around the basket and there was a leather carrying handle between the straps. This type of basket was probably imported in large quantities from the Far East. It was used as light luggage 1900–1940, before the development of the fibre zipped suitcase.
